Chance, Shuffling and Reflection: What Cards Can and Cannot Do
A shuffled deck produces a random order. That is a useful prompt for thinking, and it is not a forecast.
What a reading claims
Tarot card reading is a form of cartomancy in which practitioners use tarot cards to purportedly gain insight into the past, present or future. "Purportedly" is the honest word: a shuffled deck has no information about events that have not happened.
Randomness is the whole mechanism
Shuffling puts the cards in an order nobody chose. That is what makes cards fair for games, and it is also why the same question asked twice gives a different spread. The randomness is real; any meaning is supplied afterwards by the person looking.
Real probability is calculable
Where chance actually decides an outcome, mathematics can describe it exactly, and the results are usually sobering. Lotteries are the clearest example: the chance of each prize can be written down as a formula from the number of possible combinations. For a worked example, see this Traditional Chinese explanation of how Taiwan's 4-digit lottery works, with the formula for the chance of each prize (4星彩怎麼玩與中獎機率算式). Reading it alongside a tarot spread is a good reminder that chance can be measured, and that no arrangement of pictures changes it.
Cards as prompts for reflection
Many people use tarot imagery as a prompt for thinking: drawing a card and asking what the picture brings to mind about a situation. Used that way, the deck works like any rich image or a line of poetry. The insight comes from your own reflection, not from the card.
- Do not make decisions about health, money or law on the basis of a card.
- Be wary of anyone who charges to remove a "curse" or promises an outcome.
- If you buy a deck, buy it because the art speaks to you.
If gambling or the hope of a lucky draw is costing you money or sleep, talk to someone you trust or a local support service.
